Increase your productivity with two screens

If I said you may be able to improve your productivity whilst working at your computer by up to 20-30% simply by purchasing a new piece of hardware for only a hundred pounds, you’d probably either think I was talking rubbish, or you’d expect me to start ranting about an innovating new product. Well its true and its actually very simple.

Surveys have consistently shown that adding an extra monitor will give your productivity a considerable boost, 20-30% according to a survey by Jon Peddie Research. http://www.jonpeddie.com/special/MultDisp.shtml

Running dual screens has been the norm for programmers and web designers for many years enabling them to have code on one screen and display visual output from the code on the other. e.g. the code of a website they are working on, on one screen, and the site the code produces on the other one.

Here at Connexion the practice has spread from our programmers, and now nearly our whole technical team have a 2nd display, here are just a few examples of how they might use it;

  • Helpdesk calls on screen 1, Outlook on screen 2
  • A support article on screen 1, the customers desktop on screen 2
  • A report on screen 1 which is being referred to whilst producing a document on screen 2

 

Windows XP and Windows Vista have the capability to run 2 screens , and dual video outputs are now common place on laptops and desktops. So the chances are your set-up will support it, and you’ll just need the second monitor.

Setting up the second display is surprisingly straightforward. You simple connect the 2nd screen, go into your display properties and select the option to extend your desktop to your second monitor, which Windows should have detected. The result is that the 2nd monitor becomes and extension of your desktop, very much like having one giant screen.

If you’ve got a spare screen in the office why not give it a go, you may find it quite a revelation!
