Faster Broadband for £1.20

No this isn’t a scam, you really could speed up your broadband connection by a reported 1.5 MBps!

There are a few proviso’s. Firstly you need to be a BT broadband customer and secondly you need the right type of phone socket. If you do then BT are handing out a free ADSL accelerator which you use to on your phone socket and all you pay for is the postage of £1.20.

The BT Broadband Accelerator filters out interference from your home phone wiring to help you go faster. The device has actually been around for a year, costing around £10. It blocks the bell wire that’s prone to picking up in-home interference, as well as providing some filtering on other lines.

The bell wire is supposed to provide a signal to make extensions ring, but modern phones don’t use it. Instead it just picks up signals from around the house – such as those generated by florescent lighting – and channels them into the ADSL line to interfere with the data connection.

Anyone with extensions around the house and matching the required criteria should get one as the improvement to ADSL connections can be dramatic. Check out the BT where are handing them out.

One word of caution though. We have tried these boxes on a few different lines with varying results. On some it made no difference at all but on others there was a speed improvement, but it really does depend upon your own setup.
