E-marketing – are you missing a trick?

Our intended audience for our blog are "Business Owners Managers" in Small and Medium sized companies. We recently received a study from Microsoft on "Owners Managers" where they compared the stereotype "Owner Manager" to the character Maximus in the movie "Gladiator" sighting issues such as "IT" "Cash Flow" and "HR" as metaphors for their daily battles. The point they were making was that owner managers don’t have time to concern themselves with the nitty gritty of their Technology, they need a partner they can trust to take care of it and advise them in their vocabulary i.e. turnover, cost savings, improved efficiencies etc

The goal of the Connexion blog is to provide valuable advice and comment on IT issues affecting our customers, who are predominantly Business Owner Managers. One of the most difficult problems we face when writing the blog, is coming up with fresh material which will engage our audience at the right level. In other words providing useful insights into business technology in business speak not technical speak. It’s easy enough to blog about the technicalities, but not so easy to come up with fresh insights into how your website can improve your sales or build your brand or how your computer network saves you money.

Today it was easy though. I stumbled across something that I found inspiring, and which I think gives a truly great example of how, with some ingenuity, you can leverage the technology that’s available to do something truly remarkable and in so doing "better your business" and all in a extremely cost effective way.

It started with an e-mail from a company I have never heard of entitled "The economy on Podcast". Curiosity got the better of me, so I inspected its contents. WOW! a free podcast by a senior economist at HSBC talking about the economy in the context of what it means to me as a SME business owner. Can anyone show me a business owner who is not interested, or perhaps concerned, about the current economic environment?

I listened to it, and it was excellent, providing me with some really valuable insight. I have since visited the companies website to find out a little bit more about them. I now know their name, and if I was ever in the market for a new accountant, guess what, they would be top of my list.

You may be thinking that your business cannot afford to produce a Podcast. Well in this example, the Podcast was simply a recording of an event that the company held. Recording the Podcast, putting it on the website, e-mailing their marketing list, and using some campaign monitoring software to see who listened to it, probably cost no more than a couple of hundred pounds!
