A review of the Apple iPhone 3G

On July 11th I took the plunge and decided to order one of the new iPhones. Despite the widespread chaos with getting your hands on the phone, I did not suffer one little bit. I simply ordered online at Carphone Warehouse about a week in advance of the launch and picked up the phone in store on the day – no problem at all, unlike many others.

Having now owned the phone for a few weeks, I feel like I’m in a position to give a decent review of the iPhone as a business tool.

There are so many great features included phone all of which you can read about on the Apple website, but the main features that have blown me away are as follows:

  • The Screen – The display on the iPhone is bright and very detailed. Watching the BBC iPlayer through the phone is fantastic, just like a miniature TV. Pictures are displayed with great detail and you will be proud to show your holiday snaps to your friends on this.
  • Web browsing – This is unlike any phone or device you have ever used before and will truly change the way that you use your phone. Using Safari as the web browser is almost easier than browsing on a regular computer. The touch screen makes it very easy to scroll and zoom and opening links is very easy and very accurate. It’s such a breeze to use that it has replaced my laptop for when I want to do some general browsing when I’m at home.
  • Email – Setting up my work email was very easy and took 2 minutes at the most. We run Microsoft Exchange so my email, calendar and contacts are synchronised wirelessly with the touch of a button.
  • Keyboard – There technically isn’t a keyboard that comes with the iPhone, instead you get one on the touch screen. At first it is very difficult to use and you find that you are hitting the wrong keys and typing is slow. However, once you get used to it, typing is very easy and the predictive text and auto correction are fantastic. In fact I have found that you simply have to hit in the "rough" location of the key and the phone will know what you are trying to type with near perfect results. In fact I’m using the phone to make this post now and I’m finding it very easy!
  • App Store – Apple have opened the phone up allowing developers to build applications and sell them through iTunes. Although it is relatively new there are already a vast number of useful applications both free of charge and to purchase. Some of the most popular include London underground maps, mileage recorders and voice recorders for dictating notes.
  • Maps – With the built in GPS the iPhone can quickly locate where you are and with a quick search can locate practically any business in your vicinity. Need a printers? Simply search for your nearest and let it show you where you need to go. This is very good especially if you don’t know the area well.

However it’s not all good news, there are many things that the phone doesn’t do which you would expect to see. The most major flaws are:

  • Poor camera – The internal camera is only 2mb whereas most new phones come with around 5mb now.
  • No video – It’s not possible to record video on the phone
  • No MMS – The only way you can send photos is via email
  • Maps only work when within signal – The maps are provided by Google and are not stored on your phone. This means you can only download the map when you have a 3G / Wifi connection. When stuck in the middle of nowhere with no reception, this doesn’t help.
  • No copy and paste – It is not possible to copy and paste text between applications.
  • Can’t be used as a modem – It’s not possible to use the iPhone as a modem for your laptop unlike most other phones.
  • No bluetooth data transfer – You can’t transfer data via bluetooth, the only use for the bluetooth is to connect a hands free kit.

The iPhone and O2

The biggest problem with the phone is that it is only available on O2. The 3G coverage of this network is nothing short of appalling and what is the point of having a 3G phone if you can never get a signal?


Despite all the problems / drawbacks with the phone, if I had the chance again would I still have one?


The iPhone is a massive step forward and will change the way that you use your phone. I find myself using it for a whole lot more than simply talking and texting and it really has made my life easier.

As a business tool it is very good, there are probably phones out there that are better suited to business users but all the other features and ease of use put it head and shoulders above anything else
